Nebbiolo is the grape behind the powerful, aristocratic wines of Barolo and Barbaresco, which unfortunately come at similarly aristocratic prices. Indeed, Barolo is often referred to as the "king of wines" and comes from specific zones near the town of Alba. Langhe is Nebbiolo from an even wider geographic area, but still the same basic neighborhood. It's less lauded but is the great secret of Italy's Piedmont region especially in top years like 2004. The wines are not as complex as Barolo; they're lighter, fresher, racier and completely enjoyable. Bric Cenciurio is a family-run winery in the hilltop town of Barolo that offers this "baby brother" to its more serious reds. Brothers Alessandro and Alberto Pittatore blend expensive Barolo grapes with those from a vineyard that's not designated as Barolo but grows terrific Nebbiolo. The result is a seamless red that delivers excellent quality for the price.

Earthy, meaty dishes like rare steaks, lamb, game or bone-in chops are a good match for this Nebbiolo. My Lamb Lollipops with Mint Salt is a perfect pairing! The richness of the lamb enhanced with the mint, will play well with the bold flavors in the wine.
